Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.Luke 12:6-7 ESV
Ready for a mind-blowing stat?
There are almost 8 billion people on this earth. Over 7 billion and 900 million. That’s kind of a lot of people.
Here’s another fun stat. The average human head has 100,000 hairs on their head. I’m not good at math, but I’m thinking thats a LOT of hair. No shade thrown to our bald friends (heh, no shade. Sorry, maybe a little shade).
Now, the Bible likes metaphoric language, but I think we can safely say that figurative or metaphoric language aside, God actually DOES know how many hairs are on your head…or were. And could number them. He knows when it’s shedding. How it grows.
Just that knowledge alone is mind-boggling and shows the mighty omniscience of God.
But that’s just a start!
In the biblical times, or in strict Islamic cultures today, women wore (or wear) head-coverings. Even as late as the Victorian times in Europe, married women would wear head-coverings to show submission to their husbands. Some Christian denominations do that to this day. For married women then, the head-covering would come off at night, when they were alone with their husbands.
To be able to number the hairs on a person’s head then, implies a closeness, an intimacy. Think of a husband and wife, or even of a parent and child, and the desired closeness of such relationships. Of a child on a father’s lap, or a wife in her husband’s arms.
How beautiful a picture of God’s omnipresence. That He would want to know us. He doesn’t just know about all the data about the 8 billion of us that fill this planet. He knows us inside and out, hopes, dreams, fears, struggles. And for those whom He has made His sons and daughters, He knows us intimately and invites us to know Him intimately and trust His heart.
Why can we trust Him and His omnipotence? For He sees us and says, “There are 8 billion of you, and you are all of more value to me as if you were the only one.”
His knowledge is more mind-boggling than ours, and His heart is infinitely more loving and kind.
