Major Projects

Until I can support myself as an author, I have a day job as a project coordinator. Project coordination can often times feel like I’m herding baby ducks. There are many details to keep track of and timelines to watch. As much as I enjoy it, some days are messy.

Sometimes, confession time, I walk away from my desk at the end of the day and know that there have been little details I’ve missed. If we’re being really honest, sometimes there are little projects here and there that I can’t give as much of my attention to because there are major organization-critical projects that take up my time. We all have felt that in different areas of our life. [Sometimes installing that new outlet cover has to give way to getting the new sump pump installed.]

I wish I could give as much attention to the little things as I do to the big things, but I cannot, because I am limited in knowledge and power.

God is not.

Minor Keys

In the last few weeks, I’ve been struck by a great truth. God doesn’t care about the little things that happen to us in spite of His greatness but because of His greatness.

As humans, we think of the little things that we pray about are taking God away from the major world problems He has to sort out. What a limited view of God! The great problems in the world — starving Venezuela, nuclearized North Korea, embattled Syria and oppressed Sudan — are as easy for Him to manage as it is for Him to help me find my keys.

We think that our small issues are an affront to God because He is so mighty, powerful, lofty, and holy. So great!

Instead, bringing our small issues to God are an affirmation of His greatness.

Our great sin has caused these great world problems; they don’t come about because God is struggling to keep it under control. God does have it under control. He has it so under control that it’s nothing for Him to listen to the pleas of a small child to help them find their stuffed animal. His capacity to manage the affairs of the world is not diminished by our problems. Any of them.

Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. — Matthew 10:29-31 

I know I have apologetically prayed for things that were probably silly, but no more. I will approach the throne of God with boldness, not only for my major needs in life, but for the minor.
